WHAT IS ABDOMINAL PAIN?

Abdominal pain is a broad term used to describe discomfort in the abdomen and can mean different things to different people. It can manifest as cramps, burning, pressure, a dull ache or even a sharp stabbing like pain. It can happen anywhere in the abdomen or even the lower chest and can last from seconds to days at a time.  It can come and go on its own or be made worse by certain things like eating, bowel movements or physical activity.

Some occurrences of abdominal pain can be an indicator of a larger medical issue. If you have new onset abdominal pain with no known cause, if your abdominal pain continues to get worse or does not improve with conservative measures its best that you see a physician for further evaluation. Using a combination of things like physical exam, lab work, x-ray studies, upper endoscopy and colonoscopy the cause of your abdominal pain can usually be diagnosed and appropriately treated.
