What are Quality Indicators for Colonoscopy?

A patient brought me an article last week from Reader’s Digest magazine that listed different questions you should ask your gastroenterologist prior to your colonoscopy.  I felt that two of them were important to comment on that relate to the quality indicators for colonoscopy.  In medicine, a lot of money and time is spent on what we call Quality Indicators – things that help us predict if our colleagues, or ourselves, are practicing the best medicine we can. That article prompted me to write this blog.

We track quality indicators closely in my group as we

What is Colonoscope Cleaning?

It’s a fact that colonoscopy can save lives.  I’ve written about this many times in my blogs and I am a firm believer in colon cancer screening.  However, in the course of trying to help people we must first make sure we don’t cause them any harm. “Primum non nocere” is one of the first things they teach you in medical school- “first do no harm”.  This is a golden rule we as physicians should live by.  However, one of the topics on the internet lately is the concern of the possibility of dirty scopes being used for endoscopic procedures.  At the READ THE ARTICLE

Colon Cancer – Is there a Cure in San Antonio TX?

As we approach March 2014, which is colon cancer awareness month, I wanted to provide information to those in San Antonio TX on this cancer killing disease and that we basically have a cure.  Awareness is the key to beating colon cancer!

The cure is rather simple – get screened for colon cancer.  You just need to follow the colon cancer screening guidelines provided by the American College of Gastroenterology to determine when you should get this preventative treatment.  Be aware of factors that could move forward your suggested screening age like family history, ethnicity and individual symptoms.  Ask your physician when is the appropriate for you to

Colonoscopy Prep Information

I would like to start this blog by saying I’m sorry. You would think that after having colonoscopy available in San Antonio, TX for over 40 years and putting a man on the moon we would have come up with a better colonoscopy prep by now. The reality is there have been a few different colon preps available. At one time we had fleets and the tablet prep but due to patient safety concerns these are no longer readily available. This just leaves us with the dreaded “jug”. I know firsthand what taking a colonoscopy prep is like having had my first colonoscopy at age 40. It’s no fun. I watched Monday night football from

Colonoscopy Information for San Antonio TX Residents

I have had a lot of teachers in my lifetime. However, there is one that sticks in my mind for several reasons. I have called him Mr. H. since I was a child. I had Mr. H as a teacher in elementary school and he has been one of the most influential people in my life. I remember when he notified me a couple years ago to tell me he was diagnosed with colon cancer. If you have been around long enough, colorectal cancer has likely touched your life in one way or another. His colon cancer was found during colonoscopy and luckily it was caught early enough and he has been cured. Unfortunately, as a board-certified gastroenterologist

What is an Open Access Colonoscopy?

An Open Access Colonoscopy is a colonoscopy procedure that does not require the patient to have an office visit with their San Antonio, TX gastroenterologist prior to their procedure. The exchange of all needed information is done over the phone. This saves the patient both time and the expense of an office visit. My goal is to make this procedure as accessible and affordable as possible to qualifying patients in order to encourage a higher participation rate.
